Acetyl carnitine and vitamins alpha lipoic acid may be extremely powerful anti-aging supplements. In an 18-month landmark study, old rats fed with acetyl-L carnitine and alpha lipoic acid regained their youthful vigor and became full of energy.
Acetyl L carnitine supplements and alpha lipoic acid were fed to elderly rats for seven weeks, after which their physical conditions were compared with those of young rats.
Acetyl-L carnitine has already been shown to enhance the oxidation of fatty acids and boost metabolism, but the side-effect of this greater activity was increased oxidative damage. Researchers decided to add alpha lipoic acid (ALA) with acetyl-L carnitine to provide protection from such oxidative damage. The result was a powerful two-pronged anti-aging effect: acetyl carnitine increased metabolism, while alpha lipoic acid maintained oxidative damage from such a metabolic increase to a minimum. After one month, the old and lethargic rats fed with the acetyl-L carnitine and alpha lipoic acid supplements were more energetic and performed better in memory tests. The improvement was as if the old rats were turned into young ones. The comparison with humans is like turning 80-year-old humans into 35-year-olds.
Acetyl carnitine and alpha lipoic acid’s anti-aging effect was also shown with Beagle dogs aged between 7.6 and 8.8 years. The dogs were given twice daily with acetyl L-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid supplements for 2 months, and it was found that the supplements significantly slowed down cellular aging and cognitive decline.
